I consider myself a psychoanalytic psychotherapist working theoretically from a relational and developmental model. My belief is that how a person feels and functions is, in large part, dependent on both current and past experience of relatedness with significant others. We seek out satisfying relationships with others from birth with varying degrees of success. Our capacity for relatedness is influenced by the social environments we grow up in and help shape the development of our sense of self. There can be disruptions to the development of self from various kinds of deficiencies in a person's relationally-based social environment. My job is to respond to my patients' psychological needs that are essential for psychological well-being. This requires that I be there for my patients in a sustaining and positive way as best I can to promote their growth and development.
